Very informative article. It shows how we humans, the animal and plant kingdoms, our air, water and the earth are all expendable for corporate greed, oil and other corporations that spew toxic fumes and chemicals every day in this world. To me the price is far to high to pay. Yet, the solution is fighting huge, powerful companies and/or giving up our need for the products they produce.

It all makes me sick, yet what can a person do even when facing these facts? Perhaps we, as citizens, could form companies for things like solar, wind, and high speed rail by pooling our resources??? Something has to give, or this ship is going to sink.

This is so very disheartening. It stands to reason that all mankind has done to the earth, without thought, only greed, would cause the earth to bite back at some point. We can't just go deforesting, mining, drilling without thought to the consequences.

Great tips Dave. Why isn't the President pushing some huge projects such as a rail system, or solar system from sea to shining sea that would give a huge shot in the arm to employment? Fixing all the electric and phone lines and putting them all underground is another way to create jobs and also a great improvement. This is a huge wake up call for each of us. We need to rethink how we are doing things, the choices we've been making and exactly what we need. Less is more. We've been evaluating our own personal situation and finding ways to cut back, do without and downsize. We don't need the "stuff" that the media tells us we do to be worthy. :-) And now we are going to go back to hanging our cloths out on the line. That could save a huge amount of electricity and lower our bill there. We each have different things to deal with to get through these times. Talking to each other, talking about what each can do, what neighbors can do together and what our communities can do as a whole is a great idea too I think. We can support and encourage one another in many ways. :-)

This country, in my humble opinion, needs to sit for a while and think about all this and learn, truly learn the lessons within this mess. Then, close the doors on all the loop holes on wall street and banks and truly dig out. I'm waiting for Obama to announce some huge projects from sea to shining sea such as putting solar on all buildings, high-speed rail system across the country, putting all utility lines underground etc. That would put people in every state back to work and give this country the shot in the arm it needs right now, and also improve things for the future. Each person might consider looking within and examining their own journey to think about how they have been conducting their own finances and what changes they could make. Not buying all the 'stuff' is a great first step. We have the will if we have the way? Great article Dave. I just wonder if the government is motivated enough to do something big. Yet, in the meantime, each can try to adjust to a simpler way of life for 'self'. We are now traveling a road that we've never walked before. Each individual doing their part can make this journey through a true learning experience for 'self' and our children. Yet I'd also love to see the government actually take a step in the right direction too. :)
